Hometown Highlight: Honor Our Troops (H.O.T.)
Since 2004, the Honor Our Troops (H.O.T.) organization based in Odessa, Texas has made it its mission to care for and encourage those who fight daily for our freedom. While there are soldiers spread all across the world, H.O.T. says many of them go without receiving care packages from loved ones, which is why H.O.T. was founded by Jim Leascher whose son served in the military.
"In 2004, my son Chad, a member of the 501st Airborne, was deployed to Afghanistan where he and his brothers- and sisters-in-arms fought tirelessly to protect the United States of America,” Leascher said on their website. “H.O.T. was established to support my son, and the many sons and daughters like him, who are defending our freedom."
Through care packages and letters, H.O.T. is able to send hope to our soldiers in order to motivate them to keep going during their difficult times. Care packages include items such as snacks, candy, reading materials, new socks and hygiene products. However, what may be the most important item in each package is a letter of encouragement and photo from the sender.
Care packages are sent to as many men and women as possible each week - roughly 100 boxes per week with nearly 49,000 sent boxes to date. Through partnering with local schools, churches and businesses to raise funds and assemble the care packages, the nonprofit organization is able to send care packages to troops in 12 military bases across 12 different countries, according to their website.
