Hometown Highlight: Pecan Shed

Pecan Shed

Beginning in 1981 in the small town of Byers, Texas, a typical day to the Montz family was farming and raising cattle on a leased pecan orchard. Little did the Montz family know that their farming lifestyle would soon turn into a successful entrepreneurial business. Tim and Molly Montz had an idea and never looked back. That idea overtime created a thriving local business–Pecan Shed.

Tim and Molly Montz started their business in a small shed in Byers, TX, and began harvesting and growing pecans on 220 acres of land with 8,000 pecan trees. As they invested many hours starting production for their quality pecans, quickly, the family business began to grow. Daughter Jill and son Jake Montz have also contributed to the family business and have helped the company become what it is today.

With success over the years, the Montz family planted more orchards around Charlie, Texas area, and is now operating with 25,000 trees on 1,000 acres of land. They harvest about 1 million pounds a year and opened two store locations in Wichita Falls and Henrietta, Texas.

The Pecan Shed offers a variety of pecans in the shell, cracked, or without the shell and with specialty flavors. Their stores include homemade fudge that they make on-site, pecan candies, and pecan flavored desserts such as pies. The belief of the Pecan Shed is to offer customers an “experience” when they walk through the door.

“We want to make an experience for our customers when they come to our stores. We want to give them the best tasting and freshest pecans they can get from our family to theirs,” said Jill Montz.

The Pecan shed strives for quality and customer service by offering fresh tasting pecans every day.

“Our customers know we are local; we know where our product comes from and how it is processed,” Jill Montz said. “We strive to control the line of our product from our farm to your family, and we believe in quality pecans.”

The Pecan Shed also supports other local businesses and organizations in their area such as the North Texas Rehabilitation Center and local schools among other organizations. The Pecan Shed won the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce “Family Business of the Year” award in 2012, and members of the family also serve on national and state Pecan Associations.
