Hometown Highlight: Casa de Amigos

Casa de Amigos

Casa de Amigos, a local non-profit in Midland, Texas, is unique to the community and to the people that it serves. Casa de Amigos is a vibrant multicultural center that strives to empower people within the community and assist with individual and family needs. Since 1964, Casa de Amigos has provided comprehensive services through its programs facilitated by well trained and educated staff members; helping improve lives and assist those in need. Their mission is “to improve the quality of life throughout the community by helping people help themselves,” said Tonya Eckert, Executive Director of Casa de Amigos.

Casa de Amigos offers a range of programs for all ages. Their child care programs focus on pre-reading and social skills. Parents can remain onsite while they take adult education classes to enhance employment opportunities or wage-earning potential. Specific services they offer to adults include ESL, GED, Take2 job training, financial literacy, and VITA.

Eckert said, “classes operate on a continuum adhering to the agency’s commitment to work with clients in a holistic and person-centered manner by starting where they are today.”

Another program offered by Casa de Amigos is their youth education program for afterschool tutoring and homework help for students. This program is year-long for students and ensures that they progress through their academics. They also offer a health and wellness program with preventative health screenings, education, support groups, medical clinics for the uninsured, adult emergency dental assistance and more.

A separate program they offer is their senior citizens program, which encourages participants to gather daily to socialize and share a meal together. They participate in activities designed to be mentally and physically stimulating such as art, music, sewing, exercise, and health seminars. Additional services they offer are their case management and advocacy services for clients. They provide a city-wide homemaker cleaning program for the elderly and disabled adults. Their social services assist individuals and families in resolving difficult situations that arise due to unforeseen circumstances.

The organization strives to improve its programs through collaboration with other community non-profits and businesses. They have been involved in the Midland community for 56 years and value the relationships that they have formed, which is essential to their clients’ success in meeting their goals.

“Collaboration is also important to Casa de Amigos; therefore, efforts are made to collaborate with or provide opportunities for other organizations to work together, providing services. Many of our staff members are a part of committees throughout Midland and the Permian Basin, which streamlines service, provides accountability and educates service providers about other services and programs that help individuals,” said Eckert.
